The book publication comes out of a Dr. phil. dissertation, supervised by Frieder Nake and Sigrid Schade-Tholen. The dissertation was submitted to the University of Bremen in art history. The book undertakes a critical appraisal of the New Tendencies movement in Zagreb, then Yugoslavia, as it changed its name, in 1968, to “Tendencies”. A process of almost five years was started with a symposium, in the summer of 1968, on “Computers and visual research”. Symposia, exhibitions, a contest, and an international magazine – bit international – came out of this. The manifestations came to an end in 1973.

The author also studies the counterpart to Zagreb, the famous “Cybernetic Serendipity. Computers in the arts” exhibition of summer 1968 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. Between these two manifestations, and between the literary and the scientific cultures, as C.P. Snow had studied and identified them, Klütsch develops his critical account of the history of early digital art. For this purpose, he has done a number of interviews with some of the key figures in the field.
